As a busy mom, how do you know when you are ready to start your personal growth journey? After all, time is precious and you are pulled in a million different directions daily. Should you wait until your kids are older? Until you are more established in your job? After your divorce is finalized? Your personal growth journey is just that: it is super personal. While there are no right or wrong times to start your journey, this post will help you to notice signs that you may, in fact, be ready to get started.
As a general disclaimer before we begin, remember that I am not a medical or mental health professional. If you are feeling extremely sad, depressed or out of control for more than a day or two, please contact a medical professional for assistance.
The first sign that you may be ready to start your personal growth journey is if you are noticing feelings of jealousy, especially when looking at other moms. In a social media heavy world, this is so hard not to do. But pay attention to this feeling. What are you jealous of? What do they have (or appear to have) that you want?
A lot of times in our society, jealousy is seen as negative and a bad thing. But what if you reframed that for a moment? I began to notice a pattern when I found myself jealous of other moms. I was jealous of moms that had their own businesses, set their own hours and were their own bosses. Realizing this pattern helped me understand that what I was craving in my life was time freedom. Once I recognized that, I was able to start seeking opportunities that let me be more flexible with my schedule.
Those jealousy pangs are what helped to lead me to this realization. If I had just ignored them or stamped them down, I may not have sought out becoming a small business owner. So next time you are feeling jealous, slow yourself down. What is that jealousy really?
Challenge yourself to journal in your MAP Book notebook system. You may see patterns emerge on paper that you were not able to piece together when it was all in your head.
The second sign that you may be ready to start your personal growth journey is feelings of despair or helplessness. Again, I am not a mental health professional and if these feelings are debilitating, please work to get help for yourself and your family.
But if you find yourself asking “Wait, is this all there is to life now? Too much coffee, bills and daycare drop offs?”, you may be more ready for personal growth than you realize. This feeling of desperation may be your body’s way of telling you it is ready for positive change. And that change may not happen all at once, but you can start to create a personal growth plan that will allow you to slowly introduce daily positive growth to your life.
For me, I found myself experiencing Sunday night blues that started when I woke up Sunday morning. By Sunday night, I had a full-on stomachache and I would dread driving to work on Monday. Things were never that bad once the week got started, but that feeling of despair was a driving factor for me to make a change.
Finally, the third sign that you may be ready to start your personal growth journey is if you find yourself excited about new ideas, but then you don’t see consistent change. At the very beginning of my journey, I would read a self-help book and get really excited about it for a few days. I would implement the steps that the book outlined and wait, expectantly. While I was waiting for change to hit me like a lightning bolt, I would usually forget what the change was that I was waiting for. When I remembered a few weeks later, I would be frustrated that my life hadn’t grown for the better.
If you get really excited about a new idea but then don’t follow through, you are definitely ready to start your personal growth journey. I am really excited for you, because you are on the first level of the personal growth triangle and there is so much coming your way. My recommendation would be to start with the personal growth triangle assessment to see where you fall on your journey and then start making a plan for your personal growth.
