We are officially one month into 2023. How are your New Year’s resolutions going? Or are they already a thing of the past? For years, I tried New Year’s resolutions. And for years, I was frustrated with the process and my lack of growth. That all changed once I created a system to write a personal growth plan each year. As a busy mom, this got me the focused results that I was looking for. I thought I would share my uncensored 2023 personal growth plan, in case you are planning to write a personal growth plan for yourself.
To be honest, I struggled with getting motivated to write a personal growth plan this year. For some reason, the personal growth space felt noisy. Should I come up with a word of the year? Wait, should I set resolutions? Combined with post-holiday burnout, I began to even question if I needed a personal growth plan this year.
I decided that I would rather write a personal growth plan and have it to fall back on, even if I did not end up using it. And by the end of the process, I am so glad that I did write a personal growth plan. It was exactly what I needed to get motivated and inspired to start 2023 strong.
Before we get into my plan, just a friendly reminder that you can walk through this process with me, step-by-step, using the workshop that I created for busy moms. In less than an hour of Netflix, you can go from uninspired and overwhelmed to motivated and inspired. Let’s do this together, mama!
Again, I get into all of the nitty gritty details in my personal growth plan workshop for busy moms, but this is more or less how I tackle the creation of my annual personal growth plan.
As a mom on level 3 of the personal growth triangle, I have already established a lot of routines, habits and systems on my journey. This was not the case a few years ago when I was on level 1 and 2 of the triangle. It is important to keep this in mind as you learn about my personal growth plan process.
When I sit down to create my personal growth plan, I decide which habits and systems I want to focus on for the year. It is important to me for these to be strategic, so I am not just doing random things that aren’t connected. Next, I decide which passion areas or personal growth areas I want to focus on over the course of the year.
For quarter one, I decided to focus on three habits: 10,000 steps a day, 5am wake-ups and implementing an afternoon workout. I am absolutely not going to be doing all of these habits in one month! There is a slow progression that I explain in more detail in my personal growth plan workshop for busy moms. But this is how I start the brainstorming process.
Let’s look at the first habit that I want to focus on in quarter one: 10,000 steps a day. I have a guilty pleasure of curling up on the couch in the winter with my dogs and “forgetting” to get up. That tends to lead to overeating, lethargy and a bunch of other things that I want to leave behind in 2022. Because of that, the first habit I want to focus on this year is pushing myself to get to 10,000 steps a day. Ideally, these would happen outside. But in the worst case scenario, I have a treadmill for when it is too cold or snowy to go outside.
If this habit is something that interests you for 2023, I strongly recommend getting a FitBit. I have had mine for a month now and it has been a game changer!
The second habit that I want to focus on in quarter one is 5am wake-ups. Yes, I am the queen of early wake-ups. But after a busy December, I fell out of the good habit. I have been doing 6am wake-ups instead. I know that 5am will give me time to work on my book.. And I will have more time to spend with my husband and workout. So back to 5am we go!
Finally, the third habit I am going to focus on in quarter one is implementing an afternoon workout. This is new for me, and I have never done it before. I tend to plan my day around my energy levels. For me, that means all of my high-energy, high-focus tasks in the morning. Historically, after lunch, I tend to be less productive. I want to change that to utilize more of my day. I read about doing a quick strength or Hiit workout in the afternoon to increase energy, so I am going to give it a try!
After I have those habits determined, it’s time to think about which system needs my attention most. Because I live in New England, quarter one of the year typically means snow. I have a pretty good case of (undiagnosed) SADD that gets triggered by the lack of light in the winter. Because of that, I work really hard to make sure that I keep my SADD in check as much as possible. I chose to prioritize my winter protocol as my system for this quarter. I truly believe this will help me in all areas if I can keep on top of it.
My winter protocol looks like 10,000 steps a day, a 5 am wake-up, daily meditation, and getting outside for a walk in the sun whenever possible. I also try to consume 3 books a week, make plans outside of the house and not turn on the TV until my work tasks are complete. These things all come naturally to me every other season. For some reason, winter is a struggle for me and I am hoping by focusing on this system, I will have more energy for other areas of my life.
My last step when creating my personal growth plan is to focus my attention on what passion or personal growth areas that I want to learn more about. This was hard for me to narrow down this year. I keep a running list of things that might be of interest in my MAP Book. When I went to see what I had recorded, I was surprised at how many things I wanted to learn more about. Because my time is limited as a busy mom, I knew I had to choose the most high-leverage areas.
I decided to focus quarter one on the areas of nutrition and an abundance mindset. These are two HUGE areas and I am still doing some preliminary research to decide which action steps make the most sense. But if I can get my nutrition on track and work on my mindset, 2023 could be a momentous year for me.
After I decide on my focus areas, my next step is to break these items down into specific action steps so that I can begin to implement them immediately. This is where the magic happens! If you want to learn more about this essential step, we get into all the details in my personal growth plan workshop for busy moms.
Let’s wrap up this episode with a few final notes. Especially in quarter one, you want to start with a lot of momentum. By choosing the best systems and habits to focus on, you will set yourself up for a successful rest of the year. One of the most helpful parts of my personal growth plan workshop is being able to walk through a model that covers an entire year to see the progression.
And as a final reminder, there are a million reasons why I love personal growth plans more than setting New Year’s resolutions. If you want to learn more about why personal growth plans are such game-changers, be sure to read this blog post.
