If the reason you haven’t set personal growth goals for 2023 is you haven’t truly had a moment to think about it, you are not alone! As busy moms, we often put our needs on the back burner. After all, we have to register for soccer before the deadline, coordinate carpool and figure out what to make for your daughter’s bake sale. There are always a million balls in the air and it can be hard to hit the pause button and prioritize yourself. But mama, listen. Setting personal growth goals for moms is so important and it will change you in the best possible way. By the end of this episode, you will understand why setting these goals is so important for your kids to see and have a list of areas that you can focus your growth on in 2023. Here we go!
If I wanted to do a Ted Talk (which I don’t, I promise), it would be about this: why prioritizing your personal growth is essential for busy moms. Whenever I meet with a new coaching client, time is one of the biggest struggles we discuss early on.
Here is my advice for moms that are on the fence about prioritizing their personal growth: you can’t afford not to. I hate to be the one to break this to you, but you are not going to get less busy. A magical day isn’t going to arrive where the groceries appear in your fridge, your kids aren’t bickering and you have hours to yourself. If you don’t prioritize it, it is not going to happen, and that is the honest truth.
Personal growth doesn’t happen by accident. If you want to be the best version of yourself, you need to put in focused effort to make your dream life your reality.
The problem with not prioritizing your personal growth goals is that your kids are watching. That was actually my light bulb moment – when I realized I was living a life that I didn’t want my kids to have. Are you living the life you want your kids to have? This is a tough question. If the answer is no, it is time to create a personal growth plan and get to work, mama!
All that being said, I want to help you prioritize your time. Once you have decided that you want to actively pursue your personal growth, you need to identify personal growth goals that are going to create momentum in your life. So many moms distract themselves with small goals, when they should be investing that same time and energy into goals that are going to change their lives in the best way possible.
Before we get started, I also want to take a moment to clarify the difference between goals and action steps. If you Google “personal growth goals for moms”, you will more than likely get an overwhelming list of things that aren’t actually goals. Hear me out. To me, personal growth goals are an area of personal growth that you want to improve in. For example, I want to build an abundance mindset this year. That is my goal. My action steps are the activities that I am going to do to achieve that abundance mindset. These action steps might be guided meditations, visualization practices and reading books about people that have achieved an abundance mindset.
However, a lot of what you will find on Pinterest or Google are actually just action steps in isolation. Drinking 90 oz of water a day is not a goal, it is an action step towards a healthy lifestyle. Writing in a gratitude journal is not a goal, it is an action step to living a more mindful life.
I want you to keep this in mind as you read the list below of personal growth goals for moms. These are broad goals that you want to focus your personal growth plan on. Once you select the goal area that you want to focus your growth in, the action steps come after that. In our next episode, I am going to help you take these personal growth goals for moms and break them down into manageable action steps.
Here are some ideas to get you started. This list is in no way exhaustive. Rather, I created it as a starting point so that you are not staring at a blank notebook page, unsure of where to start.
When reading through this list, notice which areas jump out at you. If you could wave a magic wand and have 2023 deliver this growth area to you, which one would it be? It sounds strange, but notice if your body reacts to any of these items on the list. Read them outloud. Do any of them give you a rush? A feeling of dread? Butterflies? Pay close attention to see what your body is telling you.
Once you have chosen the personal growth goal areas that make the most sense for you, it’s time to make a plan. Be sure to tune into next week’s episode, which is going to walk you through exactly how to take your goal area and turn it into an action plan. In addition, I highly recommend checking out my personal growth plan workshop to stitch all of your goals together for the year.
However you decide to implement your goals, be sure to find a way to stay accountable to yourself. Model for your kids that busy moms still prioritize themselves and their growth, just like you want them to do themselves one day.
Take 5 minutes to choose a goal area or two from the above list that peaked your interest. On your calendar, set aside 10-15 minutes within the next week to do some exploring about that goal. It can be a simple Google search, creating a Pinterest board or taking out a book from your local library on the topic. By getting into the habit of prioritizing your personal growth, you will begin to find more time in your busy schedule to prioritize it.
